Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is visiting the flood-affected areas of Mahabubabad district on Tuesday, the second day of his tour to rain-hit areas.

According to official sources, Reddy stayed overnight in Khammam after visiting various places in the city along with some cabinet colleagues.

“The CM will leave Khammam today for the flood-affected area in Mahabubabad and will also hold a review meeting with officials on the situation,” sources said.

At least 16 people lost their lives in separate rain-related incidents as torrential rains lashed Telangana. The state government on Monday put the damage at Rs 5,000 crore as per preliminary estimates and sought immediate relief of Rs 2,000 crore from the Centre.

Revanth Reddy announced that he would pay an ex-gratia of Rs 500,000 per person to the families of the rain victims. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the rain-hit areas and declare the floods a national disaster.

The CM held a meeting with ministers and officials in Suryapet as part of his visit to rain-hit areas on Monday. He also held a review with ministers and officials in Khammam.

According to preliminary information, millions of hectares of crops have been damaged despite government efforts to prevent loss of life and damage to property.

An official press release on Monday evening said more than 100 refugee camps have been set up, providing shelter to more than 4,000 people.

Initial estimates put the damage to roads at around Rs 2,362 crore, while crop loss (on 415,000 acres) was Rs 415 crore.

The incessant rains since last Saturday have led to flooding in low-lying areas, damage to crops and disrupted the state’s rail and road links with neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

State Secretary Santhi Kumari, who held a teleconference with officials on Monday, asked collectors of 11 districts to be alert in view of heavy rains expected in the next 24 hours.

She told tax inspectors to make plans in advance to avoid loss of life or property.
