Teenager on a West End night out was “raped twice in the park, including by a passing bum who asked ‘can I go now?’

  • Student was raped by a mysterious man who is still at large, the court said yesterday
  • Wesley Roden accused of being the second rapist to ask ‘Can I try it now?’

A student on a night out in the West End was raped twice in a tourist park, the second time by a passerby who asked, “Can I come now?” a court heard.

The 18-year-old victim was separated from her friends when they were refused entry to Charing Cross’ Heaven superclub and ended up in Victoria Embankment Gardens with a mystery man.

He is still wanted by police, but Wesley Roden, 33, of Warrington, was arrested the following day and yesterday pleaded not guilty to one charge of raping the young woman in the early hours of August 16, 2019.

Southwark Crown Court heard yesterday that a ‘good Samaritan’ finally helped the student when she scrambled through the gates of the small park.

Police Inspector Tariq McKinsey told the jury: “We were stopped by a man and a woman, who were crying and incredibly distraught and said she had been raped.”

She said she didn’t remember much, but she was in a park and was forced to have sex against her will and as she was being raped another man with a beard came up and said, “Can I try that now?”

“She said she repeatedly said no to both males and the second male forced the female.”

One of the young woman’s friends told the court that the trio had ‘pre-drinks’ of vodka, cider and beer as they traveled to the West End from the north London outskirts.

“We drink as much as we can so we don’t have to spend money,” he explained, but the third member of the group of friends was so drunk that Heaven’s security didn’t allow entry.

They went to a local McDonald’s in an attempt to sober up, where they lost contact with the complainant and spent an anxious two hours trying to find her.

However, she had managed to enter heaven on her own and was caught on CCTV leaving the club at 2:40am with the unknown male suspect, who was wearing a light colored blouse and who has been the subject of a police appeal.

The jury viewed security cameras of the man helping the student climb the locked park gates before he was recorded leaving alone, followed by the woman eight minutes later.

Her friend told the court that the complainant came home the following afternoon with her mother.

She said that all she could remember was walking down a dark path through Heaven towards the park. She said: “I didn’t see the man’s face. There was a bright light shining on my face.”

She said a bum said, “Can I go now?” and the other man replied, “Yes, you can do whatever you want when I’m done.”

‘She is such a sensible person. She had never disappeared before,’ her friend sobbed.

The jury was shown police body camera footage of the arrest of the then bearded Roden on the Charing Cross tube, where he was sleeping rough.

He gave the name ‘Mark Moriarty’ because officers said they were investigating an ‘incident’.

I have not been involved in any incident. I’m fucking confused,’ he argued. ‘I’m not involved in anything. If my mother received a phone call, would she be torn apart by herself?

Moments later, he said: “I’m coming out of the park and there’s a guy and a girl on the floor having sex, totally naked and they just keep fucking.”

The man said, “Get in, drop your pants,” and the girl said, “You get in,” and she’s pulling my pants.

“It’s the craziest situation ever and we both had sex with this girl and he was someone I didn’t even know. Does this have something to do with it?

When he was arrested, Roden responded, “I’m not a rapist.”

The trial continues.
