A 17-year-old girl who died after a boat crashed on a dock near Cape Cod has been named as lacrosse star Sadie Mauro.

The boat with six people on board crashed into a jetty at Sesuit Harbor in Dennis around 9 p.m. Friday, Massachusetts police said.

The teen’s body was recovered at Cold Storage Beach around 11:30 p.m. after a multi-agency search, police said in a statement.

Injuries were reported and another teenager, a man, was taken to hospital with a head injury.

Mauro’s principal at Dover Sherborn High School described the young woman as “sincere and effortlessly kind.”

It is not yet known what the suspected cause of the crash was or whether charges will be filed in connection with the incident.

“Sadie’s smile could light up a room, she had a heart of gold and the sweetest spirit,” Principal John Smith wrote in a letter to parents on Saturday.

“She had such a strong sense of self and loved adventure and anything outdoors.

“A hard-working student and great athlete, Sadie was genuinely and effortlessly kind,” he added.

Mauro excelled at lacrosse as a midfielder and competed in the State Championship last month.

The high school student wrote about her aspirations to play lacrosse in college recruitment pagestating, “I can’t wait to continue my athletic and academic career collegiately!”

The Coast Guard, state environmental police, Barnstable County diving team and the Sandwich Fire Marine have launched a joint search after reports of a missing person emerged following Friday night’s crash.

A state police marine unit and an underwater recovery unit, along with marine resources from the Massachusetts Environmental Police, also conducted diving operations at the crash site on Saturday in an effort to recover debris from the boat.

A preliminary investigation found that the ship was equipped with two 250-horsepower outboard motors with Alabama registration, according to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office.

A meeting will be held in the school library Monday from 10 a.m. to noon for middle and high school students, Smith wrote in the letter to parents.

“Members of the guidance team will be available in addition to a crisis counselor from the Riverside Trauma Center and service dogs from the Dover and Sherborn Police Department,” he wrote.

Dover-Sherborn Public Schools Superintendent Beth McCoy added, “The Dover-Sherborn community is strong and known for its strength and resilience in the face of an unimaginable tragedy.

“We will continue to support each other in the days and weeks to come as we surround Sadie’s family, friends and loved ones with care and love. I’m going to hug my kids extra tight tonight – I’m sure you will too,” she said.
