A teenager has died in a freak accident after he put his head through the sunroof of a car and crashed into a concrete beam.

Police in Edmonton, Canada, said the 18-year-old man was driving a Toyota Camry in the parking lot at West Edmonton Mall when the incident occurred Thursday.

As the vehicle drove under a slope, the teen hit his head with a concrete beam.

Officers said they responded to a welfare call in the parking lot and arrived on scene with ambulance crews.

The teenager was rushed to hospital at the scene, but later died from his injuries.

He had been in the Toyota with a 17-year-old male driving the sedan and a 15-year-old female passenger, both of whom reported no injuries.

In a press release, the Edmonton Police Service said: “On Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 1:45 p.m., West Branch Patrol Officers responded to a call for a welfare check in the north parkade of West Edmonton Mall (170 Street and 90 Laan).

“It was reported to police that a Toyota Camry sedan was driving through the parkade when an adult male passenger stood up through the sedan’s sunroof.

“As the vehicle drove under a slope, the passenger struck a concrete beam.”

The department’s Major Collision Investigations Division is investigating the incident but said “speed and impairment are not considered factors in this collision.”

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage of the crash to contact EPS.

A spokesperson for West Edmonton Mall referred DailyMail.com to the Edmonton Police Service for more information.

The mall is the second largest mall in North America and attracts 32 million visitors per year, making it the second most visited mall in Canada.
