  • Cristian Stellini has been sacked by Tottenham after their mauling at Newcastle
  • Spurs legend Teddy Sheringham has criticized the club for their decision making
  • He wondered why they couldn’t find a real replacement for Antonio Conte

Tottenham legend Teddy Sheringham has made his way into the club for sacking Antonio Conte without a serious replacement lined up.

Conte left the club last month following his now infamous verbal assault on his players following their 3-3 draw with Southampton, with Daniel Levy opting to put his assistant Christian Stellini in temporary charge.

Things did not improve under Stellini’s management, however, as he was sacked on Monday after their humiliating 6-1 defeat to top-four rivals Newcastle at the weekend.

Sheringham, who scored 124 times for Tottenham Hotspur in two spells at the club between 1992 and 2003, has talkSPORT that the club’s decision to sack Conte and replace him with his assistant was “ridiculous”.

He added: “I was shocked that they put him (Stellini) in charge after they fired Conte, so this doesn’t surprise me.

‘So world law is minimal. It was a disastrous result of the weekend, he realizes it. I really don’t know what is happening at Tottenham.

“It was an absolutely disastrous decision to fire someone like that (Conte) and not have someone in his place.”

Former Spurs player Ryan Mason has now been put in charge and the club are looking to decide who will be their next permanent manager.

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is currently available, but as reported by Mail Sport he is closing in on an agreement to become their rivals Chelsea’s next manager.

Sheringham told talkSPORT that while not every Tottenham fan would have been happy with Pochettino’s return, it would have “got a lift from 70% of Tottenham’s players.

However, the 57-year-old suggested that former Spurs managers Tim Sherwood or Harry Redknapp could temporarily have a positive impact.

He said, ‘I don’t know where to go. I think there are people who could have come in and done a good job. I told you before, you could do a lot worse than put Tim Sherwood in there and rattle some cages.

Even bringing back Harry Redknapp – he’s quick to put a smile on the punters’ faces and get them to play the way they like to see Tottenham play. I’m just disappointed with what’s been happening at Tottenham in recent months, the leadership is nowhere to be seen.

“I wouldn’t say it’s the worst it’s ever been. It’s because they’re fifth and there’s a lot of football clubs that would say you know we’ll take that you know we’re about to get into the top four but it’s just the way Tottenham over the past few years and especially recently.

“And pretty much, you know, what’s the direction of the club? You would think if you fired a manager – a really good manager – you would think they would hire someone and give them three months at the end of the season to see what he needs to do. know, have a good summer and bring in some players he wants.

‘Now, of course, the new managers have to start all over again.’

Daniel Levy said in a statement after Stellini’s firing that he takes “ultimate responsibility” for his decision to put him in charge.

He added that he met with the club’s Players’ Committee on Monday, which includes Spurs captain Hugo Lloris, England skipper Harry Kane and midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Mason will take charge until the end of the season and will look to help Spurs avoid slipping out of the Europa League places with six top English games left to play
