Tech executives testify before US Senate over election threats
Executives from major tech companies including Google, Adobe, Microsoft and Meta Platforms will testify next week at a hearing of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee on Election Threats.
Kent Walker, the president of global affairs for Google parent company Alphabet, Nick Clegg, the president of global affairs for Meta, Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft and a representative from Adobe will testify at the Sept. 18 hearing, a spokesperson for the office of Sen. Mark Warner, who chairs the committee, confirmed.
U.S. officials have been trying to crack down on attempts to spread disinformation and misinformation online surrounding the Nov. 5 election, which pits Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris against Republican former President Donald Trump. Polls show the race is neck and neck.
Previous U.S. intelligence assessments have said that Russia, Iran and China have attempted to interfere in U.S. elections, accusations those countries deny. Those countries have alleged that Washington is interfering in their internal affairs, claims the U.S. denies. Tech executives have previously testified before Congress at election-related hearings in recent years.
