The defeat for Inter provoked an emotional reaction in the Italian press, with Tuttosport, for example, writing ‘Dream Interrupted’ as the main headline.

They wrote that Inter matched City but paid for mistakes and misfortune, with Romelu Lukaku ‘saving’ a Federico Dimarco effort before the striker missed an inviting chance to score with a header.

In addition, they pondered a ‘hat-trick of defeat’ for Italy in the European finals this season, with Roma losing to Sevilla on penalties in the Europa League final, while Fiorentina were beaten by West Ham in the Europa Conference League final.

Meanwhile, La Gazzetta Sportiva led with ‘Tears of Champions’. The paper noted that Inter played ‘on level’ with City for much of the game, but wasted their chances.

Despite Inter’s best efforts, City still managed to emerge victorious, with Guardiola’s side managing to clinch victory after taking the lead.

It capped off a remarkable season for City, who beat Arsenal to win the Premier League title and also beat rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup final.
