Tear-jerking video shows a couple taking their dying dog on a special farewell trip

A shocking video shows a couple taking their dying dog Hugo on a special weekend getaway to a quaint cabin to say their final goodbyes.

Hugo’s owner, Elyse, of Halifax, Canada, posted about the pup’s latest adventure during a forest vacation before he had to be euthanized due to his ongoing health issues.

Elyse posted the heartbreaking video, which went viral, writing on social media, “Holding my sweet boy for our last night of cuddling as I read all your kind words, thank you so much everyone.

“A perfect last weekend with my baby.”

She said that during his last days while vacationing in Tilly’s Head, Nova Scotia, Canada, Hugo could listen to the waves and the chirping of birds all around him.

Elyse told her followers that Hugo was a rescue pup from North Carolina.

His owners said they thought their dog was a spaniel dog mix “with maybe a border collie,” but they were unsure because he was adopted.

Elyse documented the slow decline of her dog’s health on social media — and posted a video on May 17 of him being carried down stairs at home due to his troubles.

She wrote at the time, “He’s getting better every day, but we still don’t want him falling down the stairs.”

After posting about their last cabin weekend together, one sweet commenter wrote, “This made me cry. How lucky to have you as a family. Hugs to you all.’

Another added: ‘This is absolutely beautiful. What an incredibly lucky boy he is to be part of such a considerate family. He’ll be waiting for you up there.’

A third said: ‘Immediately sob. I’m sure he had the best time.’

And another benefactor added: “I’m so sorry, it was our hardest goodbye. Send hugs, run free darling!’ As another commented, “This broke me. I’m so glad you got to spend some great times with your fur baby.”

Others shared their own experiences of putting their pet to sleep.

One person said, “The anticipatory sadness is very real. I recently had to let my girl go after 16 years, it’s the worst feeling.’

Another said: “We had our last week with our oldest baby, Hugo, last week. He turned 16 on Wednesday and lay naturally in my arms on Saturday. Send big hugs.’

Elyse replied, “I’m sorry to hear that, I know our two Hugos will be with us forever.”

The Humane Society of the United States advises, “Don’t try to relive your last moments with your pet.

“It can be normal to think about your pet’s last days or moments, especially if they were traumatic.

Instead, focus on the life you shared with your pet and some of your favorite memories with them.

“Remember, your pet’s pain is over. You are the one who is hurting right now and you need to take care of yourself lovingly.”
