Team USA won its first gold medal of the Paris Olympics after a dominant performance in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay.

Caeleb Dressel, Hunter Armstrong, Chris Guiliano and Jack Alexy sprinted away from their Australian rivals to win gold in a time of 3:09.28.

The Australians had to settle for silver in a time of 3:10.35, while Italy took bronze in a time of 3:10.70.

This came after Katie Ledecky had to settle for bronze in the women’s 400m freestyle, while Ariarne Titmus took gold again.

The Australian defended her gold in Tokyo in a battle nicknamed the ‘Race of the Century’ that lasted from start to finish.

Ledecky wasn’t just defeated by Titmus, however. The American didn’t even manage to grab silver, while Canadian phenom Summer McIntosh won her first Olympic medal.

It was a highly anticipated three-way event, as all three men had held the world record for this distance for the past three years.

In the highly anticipated final, Tasmanian-born ‘Terminator’ Titmus won with a time of 3 minutes and 57.49 seconds from McIntosh (3:58.37) and Ledecky (4:00.86).
