Team GB’s Jake Jarman has won bronze in the men’s floor exercise final, just a day after Bryony Page won gold in the trampoline event.
The 22-year-old performed a stunning routine, highlighted by a triple twist and double back flip, to take home the medals with just one athlete left to go.
And that gymnast was teammate Luke Whitehouse who did everything he could to secure a medal and knock Jarman off his bronze spot.
But it was heartbreaking for the Englishman when the judges lowered his difficulty level, placing him in sixth place with a score of 14.466.
The 22-year-old had entered the final with the highest score in qualifying and also topped the floor standings in the men’s all-around final.
However, his routine was not as clean as that of Filipino gold medalist Carlos Edriel Yulo, who scored 15.001, while Israeli Artem Dolgopyat won silver, followed by Jarman with 14.933.
After the match, a disappointed Whitehouse said, “I mean, that was probably the best floor final I’ve ever seen. And playing last, I felt the pressure, but I really enjoyed it.”
‘I just came here to enjoy it. I am European champion and I knew I could become champion here, but it was not meant to be.
“It’s been such a crazy experience and I’m still so young. I hope there will be many more to come.”
‘Certainly [it has given me hunger to do better]. I saw the competition, I know where I can be. It gave me a lot of inspiration to come back.’
More to follow.
