Team Asobi doesn’t think it would be a problem if PlayStation wasn’t involved in the Astro series – “As long as the core elements and qualities of the game are great, anything is possible”
Team Asobi has said it isn’t concerned about a hypothetical future where PlayStation isn’t involved Astro series.
The studio behind it Astro’s playroom recently unveiled its sequel game, Astrobotwhich takes players on a new adventure with over 50 planets to explore, as well as over 150 PlayStation characters for the player to find and rescue.
Speaking further about the upcoming game VGC at Summer Game Fest 2024, Astrobot creative director Nicolas Doucet explained that he thinks so Astro is “a very flexible IP” and isn’t concerned about the hypothetical lack of PlayStation involvement.
“When we started this game, we had discussions about whether or not we should lean on PlayStation,” Doucet said. “There were different opinions, with some wondering if we should fly on our own wings and not let anything hold us back, but basically we decided it was so that we were already doing that, but then also adding this layer of PlayStation because we can – and why not?”
The creative director continued, saying that if Team Asobi made another game later and PlayStation wasn’t involved, “I don’t think that would be a problem.”
“As long as the core elements and qualities of the game are great, I think anything is possible,” he added.
“It’s a very flexible IP and that’s one of the things I like about it. We approached it with a light heart and didn’t write a backstory: we don’t care much about details, except for the character design. That must be respected. The rest is really open, and thanks to that we can feel quite relaxed about where things are going.”
Astrobot launches on September 6 for PlayStation and is exclusive to PS5.
