A teacher has been charged with assaulting a student in a secondary school classroom in the NSW Hunter.

Police were called to Maitland Grossmann High School Tuesday afternoon after reports that a student had been assaulted by a male teacher.

“The teenager was checked at the scene by NSW paramedics but was not physically injured,” police said on Wednesday.

The 62-year-old male teacher was arrested at 9:30 p.m. and later charged with common assault.

Opposition leader Chris Minns was asked about the incident after a video posted on social media showed the boy being grabbed by the collar during a class scuffle that escalated after crumpled paper balls were thrown around the classroom.

“I don’t know the circumstances,” Mr Minns told Nine’s Today show on Wednesday.

“Teachers have never been under so much pressure.

Discipline at school is important. Part of that is making sure that when teachers call or principals call, there’s a backup.

“If there are examples of that in NSW education, we need to make sure the teachers are supported.”

The teacher was granted conditional bail to appear in Maitland District Court on April 6.

The Ministry of Education is investigating the incident.

Police were called to Maitland Grossmann High School, northwest of Newcastle, at about 2pm Tuesday and the whole incident was videotaped
