Taylor Swift’s ex Joe Alwyn was ‘depressed and emotionally drained’ by furious speculation over their split – as insiders reveal the REAL reason he finally broke his silence on their romance

Joe Alwyn finally made the decision to break his silence following his split from Taylor Swift after being left ’emotionally exhausted’ by the endless questions surrounding their six-year romance and subsequent split following the release of her latest album.

The British actor, 33, said he had “a long, loving, completely committed relationship” with the American pop superstar, 34, as he first opened up in an interview with the Sunday Times stylerevealing their breakup was “difficult to navigate.”

Alwyn reportedly addressed the speculation to “get ahead” after Swift appeared to make several scathing comments about him on The Tortured Poets Department, which she released in April.

“Joe wanted to get this over with once and for all so he can move on with his life and career,” an insider exclusively told DailyMail.com.

‘He never wanted to say anything and hoped it would all blow over, but it didn’t. Taylor made a fortune from their breakup by making an entire album around it. In the meantime, he has been cast as ‘Taylor’s ex’.”

Insiders tell DailyMail.com that Alwyn, 33, has addressed the speculation surrounding their romance to ‘move forward’ after the attention became ’emotionally draining’

The insider claimed that Alwyn initially wanted to avoid discussing their relationship publicly, but the continued interest became too great to ignore – especially when he’s on a promotional tour for his new film, Kinds of Kindness.

“He can’t go anywhere without being asked about Taylor,” they said. “He had his people tell everyone in advance that he wouldn’t answer questions about Taylor, but he knew that was the only thing people wanted to ask him about.

“It became depressing and emotionally draining.

“Their romance was private, the exact opposite of her relationship with Travis [Kelce]. It was partly due to the Covid restrictions, but they also preferred it that way.

“Joe has moved on and is doing promotional work for his films and upcoming projects, so he decided he needed to get this out in order to move forward. He wants to be asked about his films, not about Taylor.’

The insider said Alwyn has no “ill will” for the singer, who he dated from 2017 to early 2023, but would like her to understand how hurtful her lyrics can be.

“He wishes her no ill will, but he also wanted her to know that implying that they want to bring up their relationship without confirming who she is singing about could have a lasting and hurtful effect on the people/men involved,” they said.

“He doesn’t want to talk about it anymore, but he knew if he didn’t say anything it would continue indefinitely. Swifties never let anything die.”

Swift, 34, appeared to make a series of cutting comments about Alwyn on her latest album The Tortured Poets Department

Swift has seemingly bared her soul about their split on her latest album, with fans convinced the edgy lyrics about a man shattering her dreams of marriage and children are a direct reference to Alwyn – although she has never confirmed that.

In Loml she sings: ‘You talked me under the table. Talking rings and talking cradles. The coward. He was a lion. I comb through the braids of lies’.

In Lavendar Haze she sings: ‘You swore you loved me, but where were the clues? / I died on the altar, waiting for the proof.”

Other lyrics include: “I’m mad that I give you all that youth for free.”

In the fourth song, Down Bad, Swift admits to breaking down “crying at the gym” and recalls how the end of their relationship left her feeling “hollow.”

Long London therefore also seems to be a direct reference to Alwyn, who lives in the capital, with Swift singing about saying goodbye to ‘the house on the Heath’.

After TTPD dropped on April 11, Swift shared a statement about letting go of the “sensational and sad” era that inspired the album — but never confirmed which songs, if any, are about Alwyn.

“This period in the author’s life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up,” she wrote. “There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once the wounds are healed.”

Swift, who is now dating NFL champion Travis Kelce, largely retreated from the spotlight during her time with Alwyn, with the super-private couple rarely pictured together in public.

Days after the release of TTPD, sources close to the actor told DailyMail.com that he would be keeping a bit of silence and had no plans to comment on the album.

But on Sunday he finally addressed their split, telling Sunday Times Style: ‘I hope everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and one half year.

‘That’s difficult to navigate. What is unusual and abnormal about this situation is that a week later it is suddenly in the public domain and the outside world can enter.’

He added: “As everyone knows, we have decided together – both of us, mutually – to keep the more private details of our relationship private. It was never something to commercialize and I see no reason to change that now.

“And look, this has also been a little over a year now and I feel fortunate to be in a great place in my life, both professionally and personally. I feel really good.’
