Tata Electronics’ Assam chip plan to be operational by 2025: Chandrasekaran

Once the chip unit is functional, it is expected to generate 15,000 direct jobs and 11,000 to 13,000 indirect jobs

According to N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, Tata Electronics’ Assam chip plant, at an investment of Rs 27,000 crore, will be operational by 2025.

Tata Electronics on Saturday held the foundation stone laying ceremony for its chip assembly and testing facility in Jagiroad, Assam.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chandrasekaran said: “Because we want to move quickly, we are trying to accelerate the construction of this plant and we hope to complete part of the facilities sometime in 2025 and start operations soon.”

The company has hired about 1,000 local talents for the facility, he said.

“To prepare ourselves, we are hiring local Assamese people. We already have a thousand people working in Assam and undergoing training and working in various facilities in Bangalore and other places in India,” he added.

Once operational, the chip unit is expected to generate 15,000 direct jobs and 11,000 to 13,000 indirect jobs.

The foundation stone laying ceremony was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran among others.

Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw was optimistic about the project and said that construction of the plant in Assam will boost the overall ecosystem in the region.

In a statement, the minister said: “When a semiconductor factory comes up, there will be a lot more downstream employment opportunities created and also a lot of upstream opportunities because the ecosystem is so complex.”

He further said that the talent for the plant will be trained in collaboration with many academic institutions including NITs in the region.

Seven NITs from different states in the Northeast will be involved in talent development for the facility, Vaishnaw said.

In February this year, the Cabinet approved the proposal for Tata’s semiconductor plant in Morigaon, Assam, along with a plant at Dholera by Tatas and a CG Power plant at Sanand, Gujarat.

The greenfield facility in Assam will serve sectors such as automotive, mobile devices and artificial intelligence (AI), among others.

“It is strategically located with access to abundant water and green energy and in close proximity to existing semiconductor packaging and testing centers in countries such as Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore,” the company said in a statement.
