Sam Bates, who goes by Smug or Smugone, was commissioned to paint Cameron’s photorealistic portrait on the side wall of the house in 2018 by the property’s then-owner, Paul Sluyters.

“I chose Cameron because of his character face, his personality and he’s a local icon,” Paul told the abc after the creation of the mural.

According to locals, Cameron was frequently seen in public green spaces creating thick hearts made of pine, which he painted red and sold as necklaces or brooches like the one seen in the mural.

“North Hobart is our town, eclectic people from all walks of life live here, we look out for each other and enjoy the best live music in Hobart in its pubs and cafes,” added Paul.
