Tarago crash: Emergency responders recall harrowing screams after horror crash that claimed three young lives near Goulburn, NSW
One of the first to arrive at the scene of a horrific accident that killed three young people recalls the driver’s terrifying screams as his girlfriend died.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Bungendore and Collector Roads near Tarago, about 40km south of Goulburn in the NSW Southern Highlands, at about 1.10pm on Sunday after reports that a silver Hyundai SUV had left the road, overturned and then ended up on its roof in the grass.
Three passengers, two women aged 18 and 20 and a 20-year-old man, were trapped in the vehicle, while the driver managed to escape from the wreckage without assistance.
The emergency services who arrived on the scene removed the trapped passengers and began resuscitation.
All three victims, from the south coast of New South Wales, died at the scene despite desperate attempts to resuscitate them.
One of the respondents told Daily Mail Australia about the horrific sights and sounds she was confronted with and will never forget.
“The boy and the girl were already out of the car when the police arrived,” she recalled.
“We tried to revive them, but it just didn’t work. It was horrible.”
Three youths were killed when a vehicle left the road and overturned near Tarago, about 40km south of Goulburn in regional NSW, on Sunday afternoon.
Specialist crash experts are investigating the cause of the crash and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
The first responder said the male driver, in his 20s, screamed at them to help his dying girlfriend out of the car. He will never forget his screams.
“One girl was still stuck in the car – the driver’s girlfriend. I can still hear his screams.”
The driver suffered minor injuries and managed to escape the wreck on his own.
He was airlifted to hospital in Canberra for treatment and mandatory testing.
As of Tuesday morning, he remains in stable condition in hospital and is yet to be questioned by police. No charges have been filed.
He and his three passengers were reportedly returning home from Canberra, where they had attended a 21st birthday party.

Hume Police District Commander, Superintendent Linda Bradbury described the crash scene as “horrific” for emergency workers.
“Every deadly event that police go to is confronting,” she told the Message from Goulburn.
‘The vehicle left the road for reasons still under investigation, overturned and landed on its roof.’
Specialized traffic accident analysts investigate the cause of the accident and prepare a report for the coroner.
Police have confirmed that speed will be a factor in the investigation.
