Tara Moss shares the agonising reality of living with disorder that left her using wheelchair: ‘You feel like you’re being burned alive’

Tara Moss has been suffering from a condition that leaves her in constant pain for eight years.

The model-turned-author suffers from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), which leaves her bedridden at times and requiring a wheelchair or cane to get around.

The 50-year-old shared with Stellar magazine This week she shared that although she has come a long way, she still suffers from the debilitating symptoms.

“Your body is in a fight or flight situation and it feels like you’re burning alive,” she told the publication.

“Your body doesn’t know that you’re not being burned alive. You really have that experience in a sense,” she continued.

‘You don’t heal because your body is busy giving you energy to get out of the life-threatening situation’.

Tara recently changed her name to Tara Rae Moss and says it reflects how her life has changed.

“I don’t feel like ‘Tara,’ and I embrace that instead of denying it,” she said.

Over the years, Tara has undergone various types of therapies including foot baths, physical therapy and bodywork.

The Canadian-Australian described her long journey last year as follows: What a special time in my life.

‘Week seven at the Spero Clinic, after perhaps 150 hours of treatments, care, pain and miracles.’

Tara went on to say that such a simple task as climbing stairs without any aids is a dream come true for her.

“I walked for over an hour this week, by myself. It was more than enough. The treatment is tough, but it is definitely worth it,” she said.

Tara has been open about her struggles with pain in recent years, documenting her use of a cane and wheelchair on Instagram.

In 2021, the model gave a revealing interview in which she revealed that the constant pain has changed the way her brain works.

The raven-haired beauty told Body and soul magazine: ‘I discovered that chronic pain is actually a result of neuroplasticity – changes in the brain – gone wrong.

‘Now I want to use my brain’s adaptability to my advantage and train it not to be so loud and clear about my pain.’

Elsewhere in the interview, the author criticized the lack of accessible spaces for disabled people.

Tara began modeling at age 14, after which she turned to writing. In 1999, she published her first novel, Fetish.

She is now a bestselling author who has published 13 books in 18 countries and 13 languages ​​worldwide and is regarded as one of Australia’s best crime writers.

The former model lives in the Blue Mountains with her Australian husband Berndt Sellheim and their 12-year-old daughter Sapphira.
