Tapping into the grey market! Channel Nine to bring The Golden Bachelor series to Australia to help senior citizens looking for love – following Ten’s axing of The Bachelor

Channel Nine is set to air the latest Bachelor spin-off, The Golden Bachelor, on Australian screens after Ten axed the popular reality series in May.

TV black box reported that Nine will officially announce an Australian version of The Golden Bachelor at its annual Upfronts event in October.

The original series, which aired in the US on ABC, starred 72-year-old Gerry Turner, a retired restaurateur and widower.

Gerry decided to propose to 70-year-old Theresa Nist and the network broadcast their wedding as a live special.

Despite all the fuss, the couple divorced three months later.

The series proved to be a huge ratings hit for ABC, with the finale showing on 6.1 million screens in the US, marking the franchise’s highest viewing figure in three years.

The premiere episode also set ratings records for ABC, ABC reported Term debuted as the highest-rated premiere on Hulu for a series in the franchise, and as ABC’s highest-rated series premiere ever on the streaming platform Live+3.

The publication also reported that the strength of The Golden Bachelor led to the franchise being expanded again, as ABC announced The Golden Bachelorette.

When contacted by Ny Breaking Australia, Channel Nine said they would not confirm their 2025 programming until the Upfronts event.

Australian Bachelor franchise host Osher Günsberg confirmed in May that his two Channel 10 shows The Bachelor and The Masked Singer have no plans to return to the big screen for the time being.

Osher, 50, revealed that he plans to spend more time with his family now that production on The Masked Singer has been halted.

“It’s a really fun show, but like everything, things come and go,” he told 2DAY FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin.

The series proved to be a huge ratings hit for ABC, with the finale reaching 6.1 million U.S. screens, giving the franchise its highest viewership in three years.

The publication also reported that the strength of The Golden Bachelor has seen the franchise expand once again, with ABC announcing The Golden Bachelorette

“The show isn’t coming back because I did a bad job, I can tell you that,” he joked.

Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes, who is on the show’s judging panel, added: “No, it’s taking a break. It’s coming back bigger and better than ever.”

Osher also confirmed that production on The Bachelors has been halted.

‘I’ll tell you, I didn’t cancel our trip to Fiji, which falls right in the middle of the shooting window that we normally have. [for The Bachelors]’, he said.

The news comes just days after TV Tonight reported that producers Warner Bros. TV have been quietly “gauging interest from competing networks” for the series.

The singing guessing game, hosted by Osher, would be an expensive production due to the elaborate costumes, high production quality and international talent required to perform the show.

This, combined with a difficult advertising market, would call into question the viability of the franchise for Ten.

The Bachelors and its various spin-offs, also presented by Günsberg, have also not yet been given dates for 2024, despite being announced at the annual Upfronts.

When asked for comment by Ny Breaking Australia, a Ten spokesperson said: “We are currently in the process of confirming our programming schedule for the second half of the year and announcements will be made shortly.”
