Taperoo death: Caroll Ann Smith charged with husband Simon ‘Hoppo’ Hopkinson’s murder after he was found dead in Adelaide home

A quiet suburb has been shocked by the death of a man believed to have been murdered by his wife.

At around 8.40am on Sunday morning, emergency services were called to a home in Taperoo on Medina Street in Adelaide’s north-west after reports of a man being injured.

Upon arrival, police found the body of a 60-year-old man, who has since been identified as Simon ‘Hoppo’ Hopkinson.

His wife, Caroll Ann Smith, 58, was arrested at home and later charged with murder.

Police and local authorities have launched an investigation into Mr Hopkinson’s death.

Apparently Smith was the one who called 911.

“There is believed to be no one else involved in this case,” said Detective Inspector Christie Matthews of the Western Districts.

“We understand that the woman in the house called emergency services.”

When asked if the alleged incident was related to domestic violence, Detective Inspector Matthews said this was a line of inquiry being investigated.

Police have not yet confirmed the cause of Mr Hopkinson’s death but have not ruled out the use of weapons.

Shocked neighbors were shocked to hear about the incident on what is normally a quiet suburban street.

One woman said the couple were both psychiatric nurses and that although she didn’t know them well, they “seemed sweet.”

Her son helped Mr. Hopkinson move firewood to earn some extra pocket money.

Neighbors saw Smith being escorted from his home in handcuffs by police.

“I was sitting at the front and she came out in her nightgown. She looked quite casual, not very concerned. She had her head down,” the woman told the Adelaide Advertiser.

Kyla Vermeulen, who has lived on the street for 14 years, was ‘quite shocked’ when she heard about the death, ‘it’s quite sad’.

She added that it was “mainly older people and families” living in the area.

Mrs Vermeulen remembers hearing a ‘bang’ the night before, which sounded like a rattling gate.

Another local resident, Matt Carr, told the ABC that he heard sirens when he woke up and that there was ‘a little bit of activity out front’.

“You don’t expect to find something like this in your front yard on a Sunday morning,” he said.

Smith was denied bail to appear in Port Adelaide District Court on Monday.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
