Tape measure hack: This game-changing trick will make measuring spaces in your home so much easier

A handy dad has shared a handy trick when it comes to measuring spaces and items around the house.

Jordan Watson, better known as How to daddy online, said each tape measure has the length of the cover printed on the side.

This means people can determine the exact dimensions of a tight space without bending the tape, but instead by adding the length of the enclosure to a measurement.

‘I don’t even think builders know this. The width of the measuring tape is written on the measuring tape,” explains Jordan from New Zealand.

“I just saw this online and thought, no, that can’t be true.”

He had two measuring tapes with him, both of which showed how long the suitcases were on the side. One was 74mm long and the other 82mm.

‘Why is this important? Because let’s say all our lives I’ve been measuring a windowsill and I hit the end of the wood,” the father explained.

“Then you have to make the turn and close one eye, and then it’s a bit of guesswork.”

Instead, he suggested measuring a space by placing the enclosure at one end of the space you are measuring and pulling the tape to the other end.

Read the measurement on the tape and then add the length of the device’s body so you get a more accurate measurement.

“There’s going to be a lot of builders who say, ‘No mate, I always knew that, I knew that since I was a young boy, didn’t you know that?’” Jordan joked.

‘No, if the whole world knew, it wouldn’t be a surprise. Builders, thank me later.”

Jordan shared the helpful information online video through its popular social channels, which racked up more than 11 million views.

’32 years in construction!! Today, when I was old, I discovered this,” said a builder.

“Twelve years in the business and I’m learning this now,” wrote a second, while a third exclaimed: “Whaaaat? Nooooooooooooo’.

Others argued whether the measurement refers to the length or width of the case, and some said they had known and used the hack for years.

“It’s 1am, I know there’s a measuring tape on the kitchen bench and I’m tempted to go look at it,” someone chimed in.

‘It’s like the arrow pointing to the side where the gas tank is, in ANY CAR. That’s what I taught my mechanic friend,” laughed another.
