A man has asked police to drop charges against him after he allegedly threw NRL journalist Paul Kent into a tree during a wild street fight outside a pub.

Tamer Uzun, 35, has pleaded not guilty to a brawl over the clash with the football commentator outside Totti’s Rozelle on April 27.

According to police, the two were involved in a heated verbal altercation that eventually turned physical on the sidewalk of Evans Street.

A widely shared video of the incident shows Mr Uzun throwing Mr Kent, 54, into a tree after the brawl spilled into the street.

On Friday, Mr Uzun’s lawyer Rose Cetin told the Sydney Downing Centre District Court that she would ask police to drop the charges against her client.

“There have been motions to have the charges dropped,” she said.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Theo Tsavdaridis adjourned the case until next month so that the parties can discuss the matter.

The court was told that a “special prosecutor” had been appointed to handle the case.

Mr Uzun requested that the charges be dropped after Mr Kent pleaded guilty to affray and was convicted for his role in the alleged brawl.

During sentencing, the court heard that the sports journalist had been drinking for 11 hours when he came across Mr Uzun, who was eating at Totti’s.

According to police, Mr Uzun asked Mr Kent about a sporting event, after which the conversation degenerated into a heated exchange of insults.

Video footage of the incident shows the two exchanging blows as the brawl moved from the sidewalk to the road.

Mr Kent was given a two-year suspended sentence without being convicted.

The court heard he suffered serious injuries, including six broken ribs and a collapsed lung, after crashing into a tree and landing upside down.

The 54-year-old was fired from Fox Sports and The Daily Telegraph following the incident.
