The impressive yacht on which a man and woman were found dead at night was a $300,000 luxury vessel that had been sailing a race along the east coast of Australia.
The lifeless bodies of the couple, aged between 50 and 60, were found in the 15-metre Taloha when NSW Water Police boarded the vessel at around 9pm on Wednesday.
The family boat, previously owned by a couple from Church Point on the Northern Beaches, was moored at Tunks Park Marina in Cammeray, on Sydney’s North Shore.
The couple reportedly told friends they would spend Monday night on the boat, but when they failed to return, the alarm was raised.
It is now feared they may have been dead on board for days before their bodies were found.
A man who wished to remain anonymous rushed to the scene of the crime after hearing the news, fearing it was his friends.
“I have two friends who fit that description, who are doing renovations and who camped out overnight on their yacht,” the man said, the Daily Telegraph reported.
Firefighters initially entered the yacht wearing breathing apparatus, fearing there might be harmful gases on board.
The yacht has three en suite cabins, mahogany fittings and a galley with stone bench and has competed in races from Newport to Airlie Beach in Queensland.
It is believed to have last been sold in 2022, and the vessel’s annual registration was only renewed four weeks ago. The identity of the dead couple has yet to be officially confirmed, as police investigations are ongoing.

According to a boating expert who knows Taloha personally, concerns about the fumes likely indicate a gas leak from the cooking equipment in the galley, or carbon monoxide from the engine or a heater.
“Every ship needs a gas certificate which has to be renewed every 10 years,” he said.
‘(A gas leak) is not unheard of. It has happened before and [especially] when the boat was completely closed because it was cold. What a terrible tragedy.’
A number of items found on the boat were taken by police for forensic examination. The two bodies were then carried off the ship.
An autopsy will be performed in the coming days to confirm the identity of the man and woman and determine the cause of death.
