T20 World Cup 2024: Babar Azam reappointed as Pakistan white-ball skipper

Babar Azam, Mohammed Rizwan

Former Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was reappointed as white-ball captain on Sunday, two months ahead of the T20 World Cup.

The decision was taken after a unanimous recommendation from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) selection committee.

“Following the unanimous recommendation of the PCB selection committee, Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi has appointed Babar Azam as captain of the Pakistan white-ball cricket team (ODI and T20I),” the PCB said in a press release.

Babar had stepped down as captain of all three formats for Pakistan after a disappointing performance at the ODI World Cup in India in November last year.

Babar had given up his role after then PCB chief Zaka Ashraf told him that he would no longer captain in white-ball formats and would only lead the Test team.

Babar replaces fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi as T20 captain, who led Pakistan in the 1-4 series defeat to New Zealand in January.

The T20 World Cup will start from June 1 in the US and West Indies.
