A heated debate has erupted online among Sydneysiders about whether passengers should sit in a particular seat on the train.

Commuters on Reddit are arguing over whether passengers can sit in the single seats on most of the city’s trains.

A man new to Sydney complained about a fellow commuter having put their bag on the lone seat, making it impossible to sit on, although many said the place is a ‘no-go’.

‘Recently moved to Sydney and find this a lot where people are on the tube and then there are people who keep bags on the empty seats and show no eagerness to move the bags for someone to sit!’ wrote the disgruntled traveller.

“I find it disrespectful and frustrating. Is this normal?’

He shared an image of someone sitting in two single seats facing each other, which can often be found next to the stairs on either side of Sydney’s train cars.

Many were quick to point out that he could have asked the person to move the bag so they could sit down.

‘People sometimes need a little push to be polite. Like a child forgets to thank you. “Hey buddy, is it cool if I sit here?” Very rarely do you get a no,” explains one user.

“When the train car is empty I sometimes put my bag on a seat next to me (instead of having it on my lap) but a few stations later I look up and it’s full so I’ll move it,” said a second .

However, others wondered why the man would want to sit in the ‘awkward’ chair in the first place.

‘Has anyone shared this chair with anyone? It’s the most inconvenient place with a complete stranger,” a Redditor asked.

‘To be honest, that specific seat on the city trains is a fair no go. No one sits there when there’s someone across the street,’ agreed another.

Travelers in Sydney: are you sitting in the ‘awkward’ single train seat?

“Nobody wants to sit knee-to-knee with a stranger, especially after Covid. I’d rather stand than sit there,’ replied a third.

“No, you don’t expect to sit in that chair. Want to play footsies with a stranger?’ laughed a fourth to which another replied, “That seat is the Sydney Trains equivalent of the center urinal.”

Some were fans of the lonely seats and others said they would sit there if no other place was available.

‘That used to be my favorite seat on the train. I would squeeze and then pull the other seat back so that I was completely tucked away with no f****r to bother me. No mouth breathing behind me, no one sticking their groin/stomach in my face,” said one user.

“If that’s the only seat I’m taking. I have a disability, but you wouldn’t know it. Standing in one place for more than about two minutes means extreme pain to me,” wrote a second.
