A heatwave sweeping across Australia is set to break September’s temperature records and affect millions of Australians through Wednesday.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a ‘severe heatwave’ warning for the NSW south coast, with the warning for low to mid 30s temperatures expected to continue until mid-week.
“These temperatures are around 10 to 15 degrees above average and will last for an unusually long period for this time of year,” the agency said.
The agency believes the “very unusual” September heat is likely to break records above 30 degrees Celsius for the largest number of days in a row until a cold front eases conditions later on Wednesday.

The heat is affecting South Australia, Victoria and NSW, with the wave expected to hit Brisbane on Thursday.
Temperatures in Sydney will reach 33 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and 34 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
The agency predicts a maximum temperature of 34 degrees Celsius in Brisbane on Thursday.
Health officials warn that babies and the elderly face serious health risks from the heat.
NSW Health executive director of health protection Jeremy McAnulty said people should minimize exposure to heat and reduce their outdoor physical activity in the coming days.
“Don’t wait until you’re thirsty before drinking water,” he said.
‘It is best to try to avoid the heat of the day by staying indoors and closing curtains and blinds early.

Heat exposure can cause serious illness, hospitalization and even death.
Several bushfires have also broken out in Queensland in dry weather.
Last weekend, fires broke out near Bundaberg, Townsville and the Sunshine Coast.
Residents of the regional town of Miles, about 200km west of Toowoomba in Queensland, were warned to prepare to leave their properties after a fire broke out on Ayton Rd on Saturday.
The ‘fast-moving’ fire spread towards Pine Ridge Rd, prompting authorities to issue a ‘prepare to move’ warning at 1.38pm on Saturday.
