Sydney synagogues on lockdown: Reports of NSW Police operation in eastern suburbs amid rising tension
- Police patrols in Sydney’s eastern suburbs
- Reports Jewish places of worship closing
There are early reports that some Jewish synagogues are closed in Sydney’s eastern suburbs as police patrol the area.
Places of Jewish worship in Rose Bay, Vaucluse and Dover Heights have been secured although police have confirmed there is no immediate threat to the public.
Initial reports of a gunman in the area turned out to be unfounded as police confirmed that no weapon had been found.
“Just after midday on Saturday, officers from the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command were called to New South Head Road, Vaucluse, following reports of suspicious activity in the area,” police said in a statement.
“Officers conducted a wide and thorough search of the area; however, nothing was found.
“There is no threat to the public. The investigations are continuing’.
The unconfirmed reports come as tensions rise around the world following Hamas’ terror attack on Israel earlier this week and Israel’s strong response.
The reports come a day after three men were arrested for giving Hitler salutes outside Sydney’s Jewish Museum.
It is understood the trio – aged 30, 31 and 40 – were allegedly drunk and making Nazi salutes outside the museum in Darlinghurst shortly after midday on Friday.
The three have each been charged with offensive behavior in/near a public place/school and knowingly displaying the Nazi symbol in a public act without justification.
All three have been granted bail and Daily Mail Australia was at the scene as two of the men left Kings Cross police station at around 6.30pm on Friday.
