Sydney Sweeney shows off muscular frame in Florida after bulking up to play boxer in new biopic

Sydney Sweeney showed off her toned physique on Friday afternoon after stepping up to play boxing legend Christy Martin in a new biopic.

The actress, 27, wore a stretchy black swimsuit as she enjoyed a sunny stroll with her shirtless fiancé Jonathan Davino, 41, and friends near her $13 million Florida Keys mansion.

She had a black sweatshirt tied around her waist and a baseball cap over her wavy blonde hair.

The Euphoria star appeared makeup-free and kept a pair of designer shades over her blue eyes.

To complete her athletic look, Sweeney wore a pair of stylish lace-up sneakers.

Sweeney has settled down in Florida as she enjoys a brief reprieve from her busy Hollywood schedule ahead of the Christmas holidays.

Sweeney’s handsome fiancée walked behind her, wearing a white baseball cap and black shorts, during their afternoon walk.

The couple started dating in 2018 and Davino popped the question in 2022.

Regarding wedding plans, Sweeney explained late last December that she hasn’t had much time to sort out the details for the wedding.

‘I’m so busy working! I’m a workaholic and I love it, I love it,” she told Entertainment Tonight.

The couple has also worked together in the entertainment industry.

While Sydney co-starred with Glen Powell in the romantic comedy Everyone But You (2023), the star also co-produced the film with Davino through her production company Fifty-Fifty Films.

She called the experience of working with Davino “incredible” and recently shut down rumors that her husband-to-be would bankroll her lavish lifestyle and film projects.

“I am a very successful, independent woman who has worked very hard,” the actress said Glamour. “I achieved and bought everything myself, and I take care of myself and my family.”

‘I would like to set the record straight. You can have a healthy relationship with someone and also be very successful without needing the man.

‘We are teammates. We’re in it together. And we want to see each other succeed,” Sweeney concluded.

The couple’s Florida getaway comes just weeks after they wrapped production on the highly anticipated Christy Martin biopic, which chronicles Martin’s rise as America’s top female boxer in the 1990s.

To signal to fans that filming has wrapped, Sweeney posted a touching tribute to Martin before the film and shared photos of her incredible physical transformation.

Instead of her blonde bombshell curls and busty dresses, Sweeney embraced a gritty, athletic look for the film and enhanced her typically slim body.

She also included a snapshot of herself with Martin, 56, on set in the post.

In the caption, Sweeney described the experience as “one of the most emotional, transformative” experiences of her life, praising Martin’s resilience.

“Christy’s journey is so deeply inspiring, and having her by my side through this process has been nothing short of surreal,” she wrote. “Knowing what she went through, what she had to go through to be there at that moment, it made me cry.”

Sweeney also thanked the cast and crew and expressed her excitement to share a story that is “bigger than just a movie.”

‘It’s a testament to resilience, survival and finding the strength to keep fighting. I can’t wait for you all to see it – not only because I’m proud of the transformation and the work I’ve put into it, but because Christy’s story deserves to be told.”

She joked, “And yeah, you’ll see me kick some serious ass (like I seriously kicked some ass) ((like I might have enjoyed it a little too much while kicking some serious haha)) , but most importantly is that you will witness a story as powerful as the woman who lived it.”

The glimpse into the production comes after Sweeney, who took up martial arts as a teenager, said the film gave her the perfect opportunity to reignite her passion for the ring.

‘I wrestled and did kickboxing from 12 to 19 years old. I’m excited to get back in the ring, train and transform my body,” Sweeney recently told Deadline.

“Christy’s story is not light; it’s physically and emotionally demanding… But I like to challenge myself.

‘I feel compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and did not let it defeat her. It’s powerful and emotional.’

Directed by David Michod, the film follows Martin’s rise to fame in the 1990s as America’s top female boxer.

Sweeney signed on to play Christy Martin in May, with Michod (Animal Kingdom) directing from a script he co-wrote with Mirrah Foulkes.

The cast includes Ben Foster, who plays Martin’s husband James, along with Merritt Weaver, Ethan Embry and Katy O’Brien.

Nicknamed “The Coal Miner’s Daughter” in honor of her father’s roots, Martin is a native of West Virginia and is widely credited with putting women’s boxing in the spotlight.

Her iconic 1996 showdown against Deirdre Gogarty at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas captivated a packed arena and cemented her place in boxing history.

Martin’s success led to appearances on the cover of Sports Illustrated, guest spots on major talk shows and even cameos on American sitcoms.

Yet her life, far from the spotlight, was far from the epitome of success.

For twenty years she was abused by her husband and trainer, James ‘Jim’ Martin.

During a chilling attack on November 23, 2010, Jim stabbed Christy multiple times and shot her once in the torso, leaving her for dead after a heated argument at their home. Remarkably, Christy survived.

In June 2012, Jim was sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempted murder and manslaughter.

These days, Christy has found a new purpose as a boxing promoter and married her former ring rival, Lisa Holewyn, in 2017.

Her journey as a boxer and survivor has transformed her into an enduring symbol of resilience.

She became the first woman to be inducted into both the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame (2016) and the International Boxing Hall of Fame (2020), finishing her career with a record of 49-7-3.

The film’s release date is currently in post-production and remains unannounced.
