Buddy Franklin has accomplished more than most in his stellar AFL career, but sometimes even champions make glaring mistakes.
In the blink of an eye, the 36-year-old will be happy to forget that Swans’ key striker made an age-old blunder early in the third quarter in Sydney’s 17-point loss to Fremantle at the SCG on Saturday.
Franklin claimed a goal directly in front of goal, less than five yards from the posts, but instead of taking the free kick, he appeared to continue playing.
Seconds later, the two-time premiership winner was tackled and lost possession.
‘What’s he doing?’ said former St Kilda star Leigh Montagna in Fox Footy commentary.

Franklin’s moment of madness five yards from the posts proved crucial, with the Swans stunned on home soil by Fremantle
“He just got too excited. There was no need to continue playing. He hasn’t done that in 347 football games.
“I’ve seen it all now.”
Fellow former great Dermott Brereton chimed in with, “It’s like he lost himself there.”
The on-field faux pas also comes a week after Franklin was booed by sections of Collingwood supporters.
Saturday’s moment proved crucial, with the Dockers recording an impressive win at the SCG.
Both sides are not currently in the top eight and will need to improve significantly if they want to play finals football in 2023.
