Sydney police chase: Cops reveal shocking weapons cache they found in the boot of Hyundai Sonata at North Rocks

Two unregistered guns have been found in the boot of a suspected stolen car that led police on a 45-minute wild chase across Sydney.

A white Hyundai Sonata, with Queensland registration plates, was driving through the northwest part of the city on Thursday on its way to Parramatta, with a male driver, 39, and female passenger, 37, in it.

The car had a badly battered hood, having previously hit a lorry, and was finally brought to a stop when it crashed into a traffic light just after 11 a.m. near the North Rocks Shopping Centre.

Both the man and woman have been arrested and taken to Ryde Police Station, with NSW Police releasing footage of their arrest.

In the trunk of the car, police found a sawed-off bolt action rifle, along with a gel blaster sniper rifle, which is relatively harmless, wrapped in a towel in a black backpack.

NSW Police Inspector Adam Whyte said police were investigating property crime when they came across the white car which was a ‘suspicious vehicle’.

When the driver failed to stop, police gave chase.

He said a number of items related to the property crimes police were investigating were found in the car.

The woman was wanted for crimes related to burglary, theft and fraud.

The man had two outstanding warrants in connection with property crimes and aggravated robbery.

“It was clear that the driver and passenger had absolutely no concern for other road users,” Chief Inspector Whyte said.

“The manner of driving was horrible.”

The chase began on the M5 in Bankstown on Thursday morning, with as many as five police vehicles in tow.

Miraculously, no one was hurt, despite the car swerving into sidewalks, swerving to the wrong side of the road and driving well above the speed limit to avoid police.

The driver also repeatedly sped through red lights, intersections and roundabouts and weaved around other motorists who luckily escaped unharmed.

Sometimes the police cars chasing the Hyundai had to retreat as the situation became increasingly dangerous.

Larry Edmur, presenter of Channel Seven’s The Morning Show, was shocked when the police chase began.

“Oh my god, that’s so dangerous,” he said.

The police immediately swarmed out after the Hyundai crashed into the bollard.

Plainclothes officers in unmarked cars had also followed the car, quickly removing the occupants and pinning them to the ground before handcuffing them.

A man in a white shirt and blue shorts sat with his hands behind his back against a power pole.

Police also saw items of clothing and other belongings removed from the car.

The Hyundai came to a stop right next to a school.

NSW Police said the man and woman have since been taken to Ryde Police Station and are helping with the investigation.

The investigations are continuing.
