A mother has been accused of suffocating her baby boy for less than 36 hours after allegedly trying to drown the child in a friend’s swimming pool.

The Sydney woman, 30, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, with one count expected to be upgraded to murder, after the child died on March 23.

Police found that she had left Children’s Hospital in Westmead around 4am on March 20 without her 11-month-old baby being discharged.

The little boy had been rushed to hospital the day before after paramedics were called to a house in northern Sydney where a child was in distress.

The baby’s mother and another woman had been resuscitating the baby at Westleigh’s home before first responders arrived.

It is clear that the child’s condition had improved in the hospital, where he was admitted for treatment and observation Daily telegram reports.

However, less than 36 hours after the incident, the baby was reported to have suffocated.

His mother called triple-zero and reportedly told the operator that the 11-month-old baby was unresponsive at around 12:30 a.m. on March 21.

Paramedics rushed the baby to hospital in critical condition, with the child requiring life support for two days.

On March 22, detectives from the NSW Police Child Abuse Squad arrested the baby’s mother and charged her with two counts of attempted murder.

The woman spent a night in custody before appearing in Hornsby court on March 23, the same day her son died.

The mother was denied bail and police expected her charges to be upgraded to one count of attempted murder and one count of murder.

“Police will allege in court that on Sunday March 19, 2023, the woman attempted to drown the boy in a home in Westleigh,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“Furthermore, it will be alleged that on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, the woman restricted the boy’s breathing at home.”

The woman is due to appear in court on May 18.
