Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane weather: Storm bomb about to strike

Much of Australia will be hit by a series of powerful storms while other states continue to sweat through an intense heat wave.

The east coast will be battered by rain, storms and strong winds just days after residents are blessed with blue skies and sunshine.

Despite Sydney hitting 30C for the first time in almost a year on Wednesday, temperatures have plummeted as the seemingly endless deluge begins.

A trough over NSW will bring rain to the northeast of the state and gusty winds from the south along the north coast on Thursday, after a hot and sticky night.

Victoria has been plagued with unpredictable weather this week, with scorching temperatures of nearly 37C this week followed by heavy rain.

Drops of between 10 and 40mm fell across central and southern Victoria with Euroa receiving up to 40mm, Shepparton 26mm and Mount Donna Buang 26mm.

Temperatures will remain low for the rest of the week in Victoria, good news for players and spectators at the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.

Organizers were forced to call off several games under their Extreme Heat Policy on Wednesday, causing up to a dozen games to be delayed.

Temperatures on the East Coast will remain cool for the rest of the week as temperatures struggle to get above 20 degrees.

However, the heat will return to Melbourne at the weekend with highs of 26C.

In Sydney, showers on Thursday are expected to last into the afternoon and into the weekend, with the heaviest falls forecast on Friday.

Up to 30mm of rain is expected by the end of the week and 35mm on the weekend.

Canberra is also in the firing line for a few storms later this week, but will remain dry this weekend with a warm overcast weekend.

The west and south of the country will receive opposite polar weather conditions as Perth continues to swelter under an intense heatwave.

The Met Office said a trough would bring warm winds and possible storms in the coming days, bringing scattered showers.

Temperatures are expected to sizzle in Perth this weekend, with forecasts of 33C on Thursday, 35C on Friday and 26C on Saturday.

Similar scenes are expected in Adelaide, with long, hot days and little chance of rain as temperatures stay in the 20s throughout the weekend.
