Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane weather: Intense storm warning issued

Millions of Australians have been warned to prepare for thunderstorms and heavy rain as a powerful wet weather system hits the country over the next week.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast rain for much of Australia’s east coast, stretching from central Queensland to Tasmania.

Severe thunderstorms are expected in Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria, potentially bringing heavy rain, damaging winds and hail.

Mr Hines explained that it would remain relatively dry on Tuesday before wet and stormy weather developed in the evening.

Sydney and Canberra are expected to experience wet weather for the rest of the week, with rain and showers expected to continue until next Monday.

Rain is also forecast in Melbourne on Wednesday.

The cold front and associated trough will cross NSW into southern Queensland on Thursday, bringing showers, gales and gusty winds.

Meanwhile, showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase across the tropical north this week, particularly northern Western Australia and the western Top End.

A tropical low currently over Western Australia’s northern waters is expected to remain stationary, with a small chance of developing into a tropical cyclone from Thursday.

A new tropical low may form near the Kimberley coast from late Thursday, with a slim chance of it developing into a tropical cyclone from Friday.

“Regardless of tropical cyclone development, these tropical lows have the potential to cause significant rain, wind and wave impacts to the northern WA coastline later this week or next week,” BoM said.
