Sydney, Melbourne Brisbane weather: How cold it will get this weekend

Australians across the country have been told to brace themselves for icy and wet weather as winter temperatures continue to plummet.

A menacing cloud band has brought ‘widespread and unusual heavy rainfall’ across the outback areas of northern and central Australia this week as forecasters warn the band will wreak havoc on the east coast next week.

The Kimberley in Western Australia and the Northern Territory were the first to brave the wet weather before the band moved east to Queensland and New South Wales.

Weather zone meteorologist Corine Brown told Daily Mail Australia that the band of clouds responsible for the wet weather will redevelop in the coming days.

“The cloud band will shift further east into central and northern Queensland early next week before rain eases on Wednesday,” she said.

The band heads to NSW on Tuesday, with the heaviest rainfall totals expected in the north of the state, near Bourke.

“Temperatures will be cooler as the cloud band crosses,” the forecaster warned.

Wet conditions continue this weekend, with Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland and South Australia bearing the brunt of the heavy rain.

The Kimberley and Red Center have seen three daily totals over 70mm this week, with Monday being the wettest day yet.

Forecast modeling by Weatherzone suggests NSW, Queensland, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania will pick up some of the incoming rain next week.

Flood watches have already been issued in WA and the NT in preparation for the second of two ‘pulses’ of rain, with a second spike hitting central areas on Friday.

New South Wales

Sydney should expect mostly clear skies this weekend, with minimums struggling to rise above 10C and maximums staying below 20C.

The Port City can get some showers on Monday and Tuesday.

Queensland

Weekend temperatures remain low in Queensland as an incoming cloud band brings icy showers to large parts of the state.

Brisbane residents can expect rainfall of up to 20mm early next week, while those on the Gold Coast may see up to 25mm of rain.

The northern regions will be most affected by the wet weather with around 50mm of rain expected in Mount Isa, 70mm in Cloncurry and 60mm in Charters Towers.

Victoria

Melbourne will receive a handful of showers on Friday and Saturday as maximum temperatures just hit 14C.

The weekend is cloudy with a minimum temperature of just 7C on Monday.

Showers are predicted for Tuesday.

ACTION

Temperatures will drop to just below freezing on Sunday and Monday, with maxima of just 14 degrees during the weekend.

Canberra will enjoy mostly blue skies, before cloudy conditions next week.

Showers are predicted on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

South Australia

It will remain wet and cloudy in Adelaide this weekend with showers on Friday and Saturday.

Sunday it will be partly cloudy with maxima of 16C.

Rain is predicted for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Northern Territory

Temperatures in the Top End remain warm, with minimum temperatures hovering around 20°C and maximum temperatures of 31°C this weekend.

It will be partly cloudy on Sunday before the sky clears up on Monday.

Western Australia

Unusually cold conditions are being experienced in Perth after residents shivered through their coldest winter morning in seven years on Tuesday.

Perth’s CBD hit 0.7C around 7am, its coldest morning since June 13, 2016.

Temperatures will warm up slightly this weekend, with minimums dropping to just 5°C on Saturday and 6°C on Sunday.

Rain is predicted for Monday, showers are expected on Tuesday.

Tasmania

Showers will move across Tasmania on Friday and Saturday before clearing and leaving cloud cover for the rest of the weekend and next week.

On Monday, minimum temperatures will drop to just 3 degrees.
