Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane weather: Millions to swelter this weekend as blistering heatwave grips the east coast
Millions of Australians are preparing for sweltering weather this weekend as a severe heatwave grips the southern states.
Melbourne is the city expected to bear the brunt of the heat, expected to reach a high of 37 degrees Celsius on Saturday and 38 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
It is expected to be Victoria’s hottest weekend in a decade as the 76,000 hectare fire in the Grampians National Park continues to burn at a ‘Watch and Act’ level.
Punters queuing for the second day of the Test match between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground were already feeling the heat on Saturday morning, with the mercury expected to reach 29 degrees Celsius later in the day.
The heat wave will bring sweltering conditions for players and spectators alike.
But the heat in Sydney and regional NSW is not expected to peak until Sunday and Monday, with a high of 33 degrees Celsius in the Harbor City early next week.
Adelaide is expected to reach the high 30s on Saturday, while other parts of South Australia will exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
Coober Pedy, northwest of Adelaide, will encounter a hellish 43C.

The heat will increase fire danger ratings in parts of southeastern Australia in the coming days.
More than 10 fires are burning across Western Australia, but all had been downgraded to advisory level by Friday afternoon.
Johnathan How from the Bureau of Meteorology said the sweltering conditions were not expected to ease until Monday.
“Low intensity heatwaves are common at this time of year, but once we get into the severe category, especially with the many warm days and warm nights, some people may find it quite challenging,” Mr How said.
