Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Melbourne weather: Storm warning issued

Australians are being warned to expect a week of storms, hail and devastating wind gusts, but Sydney and Brisbane are expected to avoid the worst of the weather.

Devastating winds have already battered southern Western Australia and Victoria and are expected to reach southeastern states including New South Wales and Tasmania on Monday.

Parts of the Illawarra, the South Coast, Goulburn and Katoomba can expect damaging winds of more than 90km/h until Monday afternoon.

Nowra, Bowral, Braidwood, Goulburn and Selwyn could also take a beating.

“This week we will experience very strong winds and snowfall in the Alps,” said Yoska Hernanvez, meteorologist at Weatherzone.

‘Winds will be strongest in southern South Australia, Victoria, southeastern New South Wales and Tasmania on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Winds could gust over 100km along the Victoria coast,” she said.

The SES is warning people in affected areas to take cover in their vehicles or keep them away from trees, secure loose items around the home, keep away from fallen power lines and be aware that trees may be weakened by bushfires.

The northern parts of the country will remain warm, with Brisbane expected to have the hottest day of August on Saturday, with temperatures reaching 34 degrees Celsius.

Sydney will see sunny weather all week, with temperatures expected to rise to 28 degrees on Wednesday.
