Extreme weather warning as Sydney swelters through the hottest summer day this year and total fire bans are imposed

Highs of 37 degrees are forecast for the CBD, while the mercury in the western suburbs is expected to exceed 40 degrees.

Bondi in Sydney’s eastern suburbs will see slightly lower temperatures of 34 degrees, while for its western namesake ‘Pondi’ in Penrith the mercury is expected to reach 41 degrees.

The hot weather is expected to arrive later, with meteorologists predicting heavy thunderstorms.
