Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra weather: Even more icy temperatures on the way as snow strikes

A cold front moving north will continue to bring frigid temperatures, rain and high winds.

While severe weather warnings are no longer in force in Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania, the three states and south-east Queensland are all under strong wind warnings.

Weather zoneAnthony Sharwood said satellite images show “two classic winter cloud patterns” that indicate even colder weather.

‘On the left we have a classic northwest cloud band. On the right, a field of speckled clouds off the east coast,” he said.

‘The band of cloud on the left has already produced good falls in parts of south-west Western Australia and will produce light falls in parts of southern South Australia on Thursday morning, including the Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas.

‘As for the speckled cloud, the pattern occurs when cold air moves over a relatively warm part of the ocean, causing a large number of individual cumulus clouds to develop over a wide area with patches of clear sky in between.

‘Speckled clouds are clearly visible in the waters off southern Queensland. With such cold air moving north and cloud and moisture staying well offshore, it’s no wonder nights are currently very cold in Queensland, especially in the southern interior.”

Sydney

Clouds over Sydney on Thursday will develop into showers on Friday.

A top temperature of 17 degrees is expected on Thursday and conditions will be partly cloudy. It will be cloudy in the evening. A low of 9 degrees is forecast.

There is a very high chance of showers along the coastal edge on Friday, with a high chance elsewhere in the city.

Up to 35mm is forecast to fall on Friday and Saturday, with a low of 8 degrees Celsius.

A mostly sunny day is expected on Sunday, followed by clear skies on Monday.

Melbourne

Melbourne has a slight chance of showers on Thursday before clouds start to clear from Friday.

Partly cloudy conditions are forecast until the end of the weekend, along with high temperatures in the mid-teens and lows of 5C and 6C.

Showers are expected to develop from Monday and linger over Melbourne until the middle of next week.

Brisbane

The forecast for Brisbane is all sunshine, barring a partly cloudy Friday.

Temperatures in the sunny state’s capital look consistent for the week ahead, with highs around 20ºC and lows around 10ºC.

Perth

Cloud patches over Perth are expected to clear completely on Thursday for a sunny Friday.

However, from Saturday the sky will turn gray again with a moderate chance of showers, most likely in the afternoon and evening.

The chance of showers is very high on Sunday, the chance of showers on Monday will be moderate.

Hobart has a slight chance of showers on Thursday before the rain moves over and continues into next week

Adelaide

Adelaide can expect rain all day on Thursday.

Friday and Saturday also look wet with a very high chance of showers on Friday and a high chance of showers on Saturday.

Sunday brings an average chance of showers in the hills, with a slight chance elsewhere, most likely in the morning.

Hobart

Hobart has a slight chance of showers on Thursday before the rain moves over and continues into next week.

The chance of showers jumps to medium on Friday and Saturday, followed by a very high chance on Sunday.

Forecasts show the high temperature in Hobart remaining consistent at 11 degrees from Friday until the middle of next week.

Melbourne has a slight chance of showers on Thursday before clouds start to clear from Friday

Canberra

Canberra is expected to be partly cloudy on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with a chance of morning frost and fog early on Friday morning.

There will also be frost on Sunday with a minimum of -1 degrees Celsius. Fortunately, a sunny day is expected with a maximum temperature of 12 degrees.

Darwin

Darwin is still Australia’s hottest city, with clear skies and top temperatures of around 30 degrees Celsius forecast until next week.

Snow is falling all over Australia

Snow fell across high country Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT on Wednesday, while the strong cold front that crossed the region on Tuesday ushered in much colder air.

Snowfall totals ranged from light to moderate at different locations in the mountains. Perisher Ski Resort in NSW reports 25cm of snow on the ground, while most other resorts report about half that amount.
