Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra weather: Aussies face coldest morning in five years

Australians will shiver this week during the coldest June mornings in five years as winter returns with a vengeance, bringing temperatures and icy winds.

A series of cold fronts will flood the East Coast with icy conditions on Tuesday as a rain system lingers over the Pacific, leaving a mass of icy air in its wake.

Millions will endure another week of ‘extreme’ winter temperatures as Aussies have been warned it could be difficult to get out of bed later this week.

Temperatures will drop below freezing in parts of Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and even Queensland on Wednesday morning.

Sky News meteorologist Alison Osborne said the record low temperatures heralded a significant cold outbreak for many parts of the country.

“Temperatures, my God, they look cold, even for this time of year… It’s going to be hard to get out of bed in the middle of the week,” she said.

Conditions will be cold but clear, with widespread frost and freezing fog.

Sydney and the surrounding areas will shiver in June during the coldest winter morning in five years as temperatures dip to an icy 5 degrees.

The minimum temperatures will hardly exceed 7 and 8 degrees this weekend and comparable temperatures are expected next week.

Temperatures in Canberra will drop well below freezing later this week, with Tuesday to start at -4 before warming to a measly 10 degrees.

Wednesday morning it drops even further to -5 degrees, with -1 on Thursday.

It’s because freezing conditions bring massive snowfall to the ski resorts, with skiers at the Perisher Valley resort taking full advantage of blizzard-like conditions.

Perisher officials said there was 1 inch of snow on the fields overnight as Monday morning videos showed heavy snow that had accumulated on rocky outcrops.

Temperatures as low as -5.7C were recorded at the top of Perisher’s express ride.

More than 30 weather stations in NSW recorded temperatures below freezing on Monday morning – many in the Central Tablelands west of Sydney.

Australia’s coldest place on Monday was Richmond, an hour northwest of Sydney, where temperatures dropped to -6.4C.

The lowest temperature in Queensland on Monday was Oakey, 28 km northwest of Toowoomba, dropping to -2.1C. Oakey also recorded the lowest temperature in the state since 2019, when it fell to -4C on Friday.
