Traffic chaos erupts as thousands of cars line the Harbor Bridge with massive two-hour delays – with road works ruining Saturday night’s plans for countless motorists

  • Thousands have been caught off guard by ‘ridiculous’ roadworks past Sydney’s icon
  • Sydney Harbor Bridge is supported to Manly as commuters crawl to CBD
  • The regular road works have seemingly left the crazy season

Thousands of motorists have been stranded on the Sydney Harbor bridge with road works causing massive two-hour delays.

The traffic chaos has ruined plans for many Sydneysiders who drove south into the city from Manly on Saturday night, with traffic coming to a complete standstill.

Two lanes of the bridge will remain closed all weekend to make way for road works, with cars queuing up to the Spit Bridge in Manly.

A fed up Sydney-syder said motorists pulled all sorts of stunts to try to escape the stalemate.

“Traffic is like nothing I’ve seen in my life,” they told Daily Mail Australia.

“Everyone has taken to the bus lane, the robberies are on a higher level and it’s during industrial action, so public transport is already horrific.”

Many have labeled the city’s decision to carry out major roadworks on a busy weekend night as “ridiculous” (above, stationary traffic)

The resident said their parents had been trapped on Military Road for an hour.

“The road works have been so ridiculous lately that I have no idea how they get away with it,” they added.

Due to road works on the bridge, motorists are not allowed to drive more than 40 kilometers per hour.

Road workers have promised that only one lane will remain open in each direction.

‘Who has the brilliant idea to carry out roadworks on the harbor bridge and tunnel on the same day? F***ing mentally,” one disgruntled woman wrote on social media.

‘Only 2 lanes open on Harbor Bridge entering town AND Cahill closure [equals] chaos on Sydney’s roads and actual 2 hour delays. Huge lines for public transport. Very poor planning,” a Sydney journalist wrote on Twitter.

‘What the hell has been going on all day in the corridor between Manly and Harbor Bridge etc? Two hours from Manly to Cremorne. All major roads, minor roads bumper to bumper,” wrote another local.

The road works will last all day on Sunday and overnight on weekdays.

More to come.
