Sydney Harbor Bridge to close as FIFA Women’s World Cup celebrations get underway – as rail work adds to weekend travel chaos

  • The Sydney Harbor Bridge is closed on Sunday
  • The festivities of the FIFA Women’s World Cup have begun

Traffic is being diverted from the Sydney Harbor Bridge and Cahill Motorway as motorists have been warned to expect delays on Sunday.

Both major thoroughfares are closed until 10:30am as the bridge turns into the site of a football festival marking 25 days until the kick-off of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Thousands are expected to join the Sydney Harbor Bridge Unity Celebration, walking, jogging or dancing across the bridge, which began at 6am.

“Football unites the world, and this month the famed Sydney Harbor Bridge will once again showcase the power of our game to bring people together,” said FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura earlier this month.

Drivers have been warned to delay their journey as traffic is diverted through the Sydney Harbor Tunnel.

The road closure is putting additional pressure on traffic in the city as rail works cause chaos on a number of train lines this weekend.

No trains will run through the stations of Sydney’s domestic and international terminals as the T8 Airport line will be most affected by the ‘essential’ track work.

Rail work continues throughout the weekend, until early Monday morning, just as Sydney Airport gets busier with school holidays.

Buses replace trains between Glenfield and Sydenham and between Sydenham and Central.

There are also no trains to Museum, St James or Circular Quay stations all weekend, adding to the confusion.

The T2, T4 and T5 lines will also be affected.

On the T2 buses replace trains between Leppington and Glenfield and on Inner West Rain all-stations between Ashfield and Central.

The timetable also changes between Macarthur, Glenfield and Central with the train to make an extra stop in Homebush but to go through Ashfield.

T1 Western Line Penrith trains make additional stops at Burwood and Ashfield. T9 Northern line trains make additional stops at Croydon and Ashfield.

Trains will still run along the T4, but Cronulla and Waterfall services will make additional stops at St Peters and Erskineville.

Additional trains will also run between Hurstville and Bondi Junction.

From 2am on Saturdays, buses replace trains between Leppington and Richmond on the T5.

The track work will take place until 02:00 on Monday.
