Sydney forward Patrick Wood has been mocked for producing one of the worst misses in football history after firing an open goal chance wide from close range.

The 21-year-old started up front for Sydney in their A-League match against Central Coast Mariners on Saturday and was left with his head in his hands after the disastrous mistake.

Sydney was already 3-0 up within the first half hour of the match when Wood was presented with a golden opportunity to give the visitors a four-goal cushion in New South Wales, Australia.

A back pass to Central Coast goalkeeper Danny Vukovic ended up in Wood’s path via poor touch, giving the Sydney forward a huge opportunity to score an easy tap-in.

Wood was just two yards from goal and looking at an open net when he took a first touch to set himself up for a finish that should have been easily tipped over the line.

However, he somehow shot his effort wide of the post, much to the shock of everyone in the stadium, including his teammates and opponents.

The easier finish might have been to hit the ball with his weaker left foot the first time rather than taking an extra touch and provoking more pressure.

Wood immediately dropped his head into his hands as realization set in, before trudging back to the halfway line as a goal kick got the game going again.

Commenting on the goal on TNT Sports couldn’t believe what had just happened and described Wood’s shock, saying: ‘Oh and the miss, well anything can and will happen because you’ll never see that again.

Another added: ‘A deserved miss, he should have rolled it home with his left foot instead of running around the ball to use his right foot.’

Sydney won the match 3–1 with Wood being substituted in the 61st minute.
