EXCLUSIVE: Sydney FC legend Alex Brosque LAUGHS AT the club’s East vs. West ‘class war’ rivalry with the Wanderers, and reveals why their upcoming clash is the biggest game of the season.
- Sydney FC welcomes the Wanderers this Saturday
- A lot at stake in the third derby of the season
- Former star Alex Brosque had some fun with some comments
- Suggestion ‘westies’ make it harder on life made him smile
Sydney FC great Alex Brosque has laughed off what he believes to be a manufactured class war rivalry pitting Western Sydney Wanderers supporters against their eastern suburban counterparts ahead of this Saturday’s derby.
Brosque, 39, one of the Sky Blues’ most decorated players, grew up in western Sydney and became a teenage star while playing for Marconi Stallions.
Antagonistic suggestions from Wanderers boss Marko Rudan that fans from the east “have it easier in life” than their “working class rivals from the west” made Brosque smile.
“I laughed when ‘Rudes’ made those comments,” he told Daily Mail Australia.
‘Whatever works. I still live in the western suburbs and I think Marko lives somewhere near the east.
Sydney FC great Alex Brosque (pictured left) has laughed off claims about Western Sydney Wanderers’ ‘oppressed’ supporters ahead of Saturday’s derby.
Suggestions from Wanderers boss Marko Rudan (pictured) that fans in eastern Sydney “have it easier in life” than their rivals in the “working-class west” made Brosque smile.
“The fans eat that kind of comment, it’s motivating and it filters through the players.
“All the talk adds to the atmosphere of what I think is the biggest game this season in the A-League.”
Brosque, who is earning much applause for his football analysis on SEN Radio and Channel 10, could not remember the last time both clubs were in the top six, hence his statement.
It makes this weekend’s derby at the Allianz Stadium all the more enticing, especially given that the rivalry’s ledger stands at one win apiece this season.
Adding to the spice were recently retired Socceroo Brandon Borrello’s scathing comments in the second derby last month.
An enthused Borrello declared that Steve Corica’s men were at ‘explosion average’ and ‘didn’t deserve anything’ following a 1-0 win at Commbank Stadium, and it did not go unnoticed.
Sydney FC legend Milos Ninkovic shocked Sky Blues fans after defecting to the Wanderers in the off-season.
Brosque totally agreed.
“Good for him, Brandon is entitled to his opinion…it shows his passion and will to win,” he said.
“I’m sure the Sydney FC fans will let their feelings for him know every time he touches the ball.”
A crowd close to capacity will converge on the Allianz Stadium, with general admission already sold out.
