Why thousands of men are complaining about clothes shopping in Sydney right now: ‘It makes me want to cry’

An Australian man has expressed his frustration after he couldn’t find ‘basic’ men’s winter clothing in Sydney. And he’s not the only one.

The customer indicated that it is hard to find good options in cheaper stores, especially if you are looking for simple, unbranded designs.

He claimed that Sydney was the worst place he had ever been. According to him, all the affordable shops have plenty of short sleeves, but very few well-fitting long-sleeved garments.

Even popular stores like Zara and Myer were out of the question for him, as he was unwilling to spend more than $60 on one simple purchase.

“I just want a simple long sleeve shirt with no ridiculous text or branding on it,” he fumed on Reddit.

Unfortunately, in the UK there are no mid-range clothing stores like Next or Marks and Spencer that offer decent clothes at average prices.

‘In principle [all I want] is the IKEA of standard clothing without brand labels or flashy designs.’

Many people indicated that they faced the same problem and thought it was due to high rent and high cost of living.

The male shopper preferred to shop physically rather than online

“A terrible, perfect storm of 1) small population, 2) high rents, 3) high wages and 4) isolation from other ‘fashion centers’ such as Europe and North America,” one wrote.

‘Because they’ve been exposed to this for decades, men never learn to be adventurous in their clothing choices. Every man is a carbon copy of RM boots, Uniqlo. Which makes it even harder for new brands to really get a foothold.’

‘Menswear does need more variety. Connor, YD and Tarocash are fine for business and nightlife, but not so much for comfortable or even casual looks,’ added another.

‘City Surf used to be OK, but now it’s hard to find a variety of T-shirts, pants or shorts that aren’t the same every year. Myer is a rip-off.’

Many said Uniqlo was the “only place” they found success — even if it meant dressing the same as their size most of the time

Others said that, aside from “dream shopping” in cities like Melbourne and Brisbane, Uniqlo was the “only place” in Sydney where they had found success – even if it meant dressing the same as their friends most of the time.

Another recommended Australian brand to try As colorbefore options like Cotton On, TK Maxx, Uturn Outlet and H&M were added.

Others criticised the ‘sad’ state of menswear in Australia in general.

‘The styles are so boring… all grey, blue, white and black, no pattern, stripes or checks… Such depressing clothes, they make me want to cry,’ one person wrote.

Even brands with more money are struggling to survive, as a number of well-known Australian brands have recently gone bust due to the country’s cost of living crisis.
