Police release CCTV footage of a man in sunglasses following suspicious death in Sydney CBD

Detectives investigating the ‘suspicious’ death of a man in Sydney’s CBD have shared grainy CCTV footage of a man wearing sunglasses which they say could help their investigation.

New South Wales Police released the grisly footage on Thursday following the death of the 43-year-old man in his York St rental apartment on January 12.

Police and paramedics were called to the apartment shortly before 6 p.m., where they discovered the man’s body.

His cause of death has not been made public.

Two other people within the unit, a 47-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman believed to have had an ‘intimate’ relationship with the deceased, were spoken to at the scene.

The pair were later taken to Day Street Police Station to assist with inquiries and have since been released. No charges have been filed.

Specialist forensic police examined the crime scene and found drug paraphernalia and handwritten notes which would form part of their investigation.

As the police investigation continues, led by Strike Force Merelynne, detectives have released CCTV footage and photographs of a man they believe was on the same floor as, or possibly in, the 43-year-old’s apartment on the day of his death.

The man is described as white, in his 40s and clean-shaven.

He was wearing a black hat, sunglasses, a black shirt with a blue triangular print, a black jacket, dark jeans and khaki boots.

“The man was seen leaving the apartment floor around 8 a.m. that day, Friday, January 12, 2024,” police said in a statement.

He was filmed chatting to someone at reception before driving away in a white ute.

Anyone who may have information about the incident or the identity of the man is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
