Australians will endure another frigid weekend as soaring temperatures, icy winds and showers continue to batter large parts of the country.
The cold weather is forecast to continue this weekend as a prolonged cold snap settles into eastern parts of Australia, causing temperatures to drop.
Widespread frost is expected across the eastern third of the country, expected to extend to South Australia and southern parts of the Northern Territory.
It comes after Sydney and Melbourne shivered through a 7C and 1.6C respectively on Wednesday, while ‘feels like’ temperatures were even lower.
Australians celebrated the winter solstice on Friday, with less than 10 hours of sunlight expected today in sub-zero temperatures this week.

Sydney
A strong wave of southerly winds along the New South Wales coastline will cause temperatures to drop in Sydney and surrounding areas this weekend.
Weather Zone meteorologist Yoska Hermanzes told Daily Mail Australia the burst of strong winds could reach 60-65 km/h on Saturday afternoon.
“These winds will make the city feel quite cool,” Ms Hermanzes said.
Sydney is forecast to experience gusty winds and showers this weekend, with maximum temperatures struggling to rise above 14 degrees Celsius.
The forecaster said Jervis Bay, Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter Coast would be most affected by showers with temperatures falling as low as 10 degrees Celsius.
“In Sydney, showers will extend into Sunday afternoon,” Ms Hermanzes said.

Brisbane
Further north, clouds are expected to develop in Brisbane from Friday evening.
The strong winds will move north from Sydney into southeastern Queensland, with gusts reaching 40 kilometers per hour along the coast on Sunday and Monday morning.
On Saturday, Ms Hermanzes said Brisbane would see some showers in the morning and afternoon, with temperatures dropping.
“The high on Saturday will only be 17 to 18 degrees Celsius, which is quite cold for Brisbane,” she said.
Melbourne
Further south in Melbourne it will remain cold but generally dry this weekend.
The city will be mostly cloudy on Saturday with isolated showers in the morning, with temperatures reaching only 12 degrees Celsius.
Some fog is forecast for Sunday morning before skies clear and Melburnians can enjoy a dry and sunny day with light winds.
On Sunday, temperatures are expected to reach just 13 degrees Celsius.

Perth
Western Australia’s capital is in for a wet weekend, with up to 20mm of rain forecast for Saturday and up to 2mm on Sunday.
The minimum temperatures will be between 7 and 12 degrees until Sunday.
Adelaide
It will be partly cloudy in Adelaide on Friday with a chance of morning fog.
Some showers are forecast for the afternoon, with highs around 7 degrees and highs around 16 degrees on Friday.
Over the weekend, some sun is expected to peek through the clouds on Saturday before cloud returns on Sunday with temperatures expected to reach just 15 degrees Celsius.
Showers are forecast in Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane this weekend, with the WA capital receiving up to 20mm on Saturday
Canberra
From Friday to Sunday, minimum temperatures in the country’s capital are expected to range between -1 and 1 degrees Celsius.
Morning frost and maximum temperatures of 13 degrees are expected for the weekend.
There is also a chance of showers on Thursday and Friday, with 2 mm of rain expected on both days.
Hobart
Partly cloudy weather is expected on Friday and the weekend, with low temperatures of 4 to 6 degrees and a high of 13 degrees.
Darwin
Australians in Darwin will escape the cold weather with sunny conditions and temperatures remaining in the 30s well into the weekend.
The minimal conditions may see some mornings drop to 19°C.
