‘Disgusting’ detail in $750 rental property sparks outrage about Australia’s cost-of-living crisis

An ad for a ‘completely renovated’ home has already tipped frustrated tenants over the edge, with pictures of a toilet connected to water via a hose to the bathroom sink.

Several property listings for the Auburn property in Sydney’s west have been shared widely on social media, with commentators baffled by the $750 per week asking price.

‘The toilet is connected via a hose from the sink. The kitchen is a nightmare and the laundry looks like you’re going to live in,” one person wrote.

The 613 m² red brick property has three bedrooms, a ‘proper kitchen’, a bathroom, a private garden and off-street parking.

There is also a granny flat on site, but this is ‘not included’ in the rental price.

Angry viewers were shocked to see water being supplied to the three-bedroom house’s two toilets (one pictured) via garden hoses

Although the description sounds like an ideal home, photos of the property show that it has been seriously neglected.

Not to mention that the advertised rent is $100 above the average price of a three-bedroom home in the popular suburb, according to data from Realty.com.au.

“Imagine what the rooms look like that they didn’t show,” said one commenter.

“Oh my god, that should be illegal to advertise!” How is that a place for anyone to live?,” wrote another.

“Trying to decide which bathroom is better: the one with the hose or the one that looks like a grenade went off in it,” said another.

Meanwhile, the kitchen features several crumbling cabinets, dirty floors, and random wall tiles.

Another alarming photo showed a second toilet dependent on a garden hose in a dirty concrete room with a hot water tank supported by spare bricks.

“That’s not a crack house, that’s a crack house,” one viewer wrote online.

‘How can you knowingly let someone live there and take their money? I think I’d rather sleep outside when looking for a place to rent,” said another.

Some commenters theorized that the owner may have accidentally uploaded photos of the home before the renovation.

“Surely they forgot to add the new photos – the ones AFTER the renovations,” said one.

“Completely renovated, is this an April Fool’s joke?” wrote another.

Only one photo of the exterior of the house remains attached to the rental ad and the rest have been removed by the owners.

The ad was taken by viewers as just another sign of Sydney’s growing rental crisis, which is seeing prices in the city skyrocket due to shortages.

Corelogic found that the average rent in Sydney is now $745, with the more notable eastern suburbs at $1,000, while the Northern Beaches was almost $1,170.
