Sydney Airport flights cancelled: Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar customers impacted

Dozens of flights from Sydney Airport have been cancelled due to severe weather on the east coast.

The airport needs only one runway as strong winds rage through the city.

“Due to strong winds, Airservices Australia is using our east-west runway, which may cause delays throughout the day,” a Sydney Airport spokeswoman said.

“We encourage passengers to check with their airline regarding the status of their flight.”

Qantas has cancelled at least 25 flights departing from Sydney Airport, including 10 to Melbourne, four to Canberra and 11 to other Australian destinations.

Virgin Australia also cancelled 13 flights from Sydney, eight of which were to Melbourne and three to Canberra.

Jetstar has cancelled three flights from Sydney to Melbourne, as well as seven additional flights from Sydney.

This is happening as powerful wind gusts of 60 to 70 km/h are blowing across the city, with gusts of up to 120 km/h.

An extreme weather warning has been issued due to damaging wind gusts from the Victorian border to Newcastle north and inland to the Snowy Mountains and ACT.

“In the early hours of (Monday) the winds will really start to pick up over the east coast of New South Wales,” senior meteorologist Sarah Scully said on Sunday.

‘Winds of this magnitude can blow down trees and branches, causing damage to property. Power lines can also fall, leading to power outages. Loose objects can also be blown away, causing further damage.’

A 63-year-old woman in New South Wales has died after the hut she was staying in was crushed by a falling tree early Monday morning.

Police were called to the holiday park on Merool Road, near Albury in the state’s south, just before 4am, where they found the woman’s body.

She has yet to be formally identified. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

A 63-year-old man was taken to hospital in Echuca for treatment.
