A swimmer died on a popular beach in Cronulla with her two male swimming partners who were rushed to hospital, one in critical condition.

The three men got into trouble around 1:50 p.m. at Shelley Park Beach on Saturday.

NSW Police say two men were unconscious in the water and when lifeguards arrived on jet skis they were taken to nearby Cronulla beach.

The other man managed to make it back to shore.

One man, whose age is currently unknown, died, while the other two men were taken to hospital.

A man in his 40s was underwater for three minutes and was unconscious when lifeguards arrived.

He was taken by ambulance to St George’s Hospital in critical condition.

The third man, in his 20s, is conscious and was taken to St George’s Hospital for treatment.

It is understood that a rescuer also required medical treatment after suffering exhaustion.

Sutherland Shire Police Area Command officers are conducting investigations and will prepare a report for the coroner.
