Swansea City confirmed that the west is always the best these days when it comes to the South Wales derby with another dominant win.

A goal in both halves from Ollie Cooper and Michael Obafemi gave the second city a third consecutive fully comfortable win over their capital rivals.

It would have been a different story if Cardiff striker Callum Robinson had not been shown a straight red card for a sixth minute moment of madness of a typically spirited derby, which also saw five yellow cards.

But Robinson’s temperamental implosion – an irrefutable dismissal for throwing the ball in Ben Cabango’s face – hints at a deeper inferiority complex for the Bluebirds.

They have now lost six of their last eight encounters against their biggest rivals, in which time the total score now stands at a remarkable 15 goals to one.

As a result, after six wins in eight games, Swansea rose to fourth in the standings, while Cardiff dropped to 20th in the championship after their third consecutive defeat.

There were some typically thunderous and heart-pounding challenges in the opening minutes, but play soon settled into a familiar pattern from the last few encounters of Swansea passing and Cardiff pursuit.

But even the raw nature of the first six minutes couldn’t explain Robinson’s reckless loss of control that immediately earned him a red card.

The former West Brom striker got a nudge from Cabango as he waited under a high ball, but his reaction was still shocking.

Without hesitation – and under the gaze of Referee Darren Bond – the attacker forcibly threw the ball into Cabango’s face from point blank range.

The Wales international defender put his hands around his nose and the official immediately gave a red card.

Robinson was initially deemed to have committed a foul before reacting badly in the 7th minute

Cardiff’s interim manager Mark Hudson may have been meticulous in planning and preparing for his first derby in charge, but his vastly experienced striker had just thrown the whole strategy out the window.

No wonder Hudson just shook his head in despair as Robinson trudged away.

Swansea tried to extend Cardiff’s limited resources on both flanks, but it wasn’t until the 20th minute for the home side to create a clear chance.

Michael Obafemi was let loose through the middle, but although he neatly housed Curtis Nelson, the striker’s shot went wide.

It was a miss that the Swans almost had to pay moments later when the Cardiff defender

Cardiff’s Cedric Kipre made a bizarre blunder, but escaped any form of punishment

Tom Sang sweetly bonded with Cabango’s clearance and forced Steven Benda to make an excellent save

Swansea found it difficult to maintain accuracy, even though their possession was overwhelming, but they were rightfully mortified. Cardiff defender Cedric Kipre appeared to knock the ball away from Cabango’s cross – a foul that went unnoticed by the umpires.

However, it mattered less two minutes later, when Cooper gave them a deserved lead.

At the end of a patient attack, Luke Cundle appeared to have lost control in the penalty area, but when the ball fell to Cooper, the midfielder showed alertness and composure to open the score with a curling shot.

Obafemi raced away and applied a real quality finish and composure to beat their rivals

It was the kind of quality and composure that underscores why many are tipping the 22-year-old for inclusion in Wales’ squad for next month’s World Cup.

Cardiff’s only real threat came during a brief shower early in the second half when Mark Harris headed off a cross from Callum O’Dowda.

Normal serve – and the result – was confirmed in the 67th minute when Matt Grimes pulled in a beautiful pass for Obafemi to make up for it from the same position as his previous miss.

The Republic of Ireland attacker might have scored two more goals when the 10-man Cardiff tired, while Cabango also got a chant over the bar.
