Don Carmignani, 53, was fighting for his life in hospital after the horrific beating on Wednesday, a day after Cash App founder Bob Lee was stabbed to death.
Friends close to the victim claim he was targeted by a “group of homeless people” as he left his mother’s home just outside the city’s Marina District.
Carmignani – who served as fire commissioner in 2013 – was reportedly slashed with a knife and had his skull fractured by the pipe.

San Francisco police have arrested 24-year-old Gareth Doty, who is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and battery causing serious injury.
A male witness – who wished to remain anonymous – uploaded the video to the Citizens App after the attack.
He told CBS news: “He brutally beat them. I yelled ‘stop, stop, stop! I was upstairs.
“People were recording, but I think people are scared because they don’t know what these people are carrying.”
Attorney Joe Alioto-Veronese — who is friends with Carmignani — wrote on Twitter on Thursday: “At 7 p.m. last night in the marina district on Laguna and Chestnut Streets, a friend and former San Francisco commissioner was brutally beaten by a group of homeless people outside the front door. . from his house.
“He’s fighting for his life at SF General. Pray4Him.’
Carmignani underwent surgery on Thursday and remained in ICU from Friday afternoon, Alioto-Veronese later confirmed.
The beating was reminiscent of an attack on Paul Pelosi – the husband of former House Speaker Nancy – at his mansion in San Francisco.
Pelosi was hammered on Oct. 28 by a crazed David DePape at his home in Pacific Heights, about a mile from Carmignani’s block.

He told the New York Post“It’s dangerous here and the fact that this could happen to a big guy like Don Carmignani tells us it could happen to anyone in any neighborhood of San Francisco.”
“The fact that even Paul Pelosi can be similarly assaulted in front of police officers in his own home shows that no one is safe in this town.”
San Francisco has seen a violent increase in crime, with police statistics showing that the city’s homicide rate increased 36.6 percent from 2019 to 2022 — from 41 to 56.
Violent crime has also increased 7.5 percent across San Francisco over the past three years.
Property crime has increased by 20.7 percent over the past three years.
Catherine Stefani, representing the Marina District, said in a statement that the city should provide the resources law enforcement officers need “to turn the tide on crime in this city.”
She added: “As I pray for Don, his family and his recovery, I want to be very clear: We cannot tolerate this type of criminal activity.
‘Not in the marina, nowhere. Everyone has the right to feel safe in San Francisco, and that means the city needs to stop playing politics with public safety.”
